WV Filmmakers Guild to celebrate 25 years June 6-8, Sutton

Barton Weiss, once president of the Assoc. of Independent Film & Video Makers, founder of the Dallas Video Festival, and many other events, began his college teaching career at West Virginia State College, Communications Dept., after studing with Milos Forman at Columbia University. Weiss was one of the several WV filmmakers who founded the WV Filmmakers Guild in 1983.

 Others included Robert Gates, Peter Griesinger of Buckhannon, Chip Hitchcock of Morgantown, Bill Hogan of Charleston, and myself. Indeed, we had one of the first meetings at Hogan’s home on Birch St. on Charleston’s West Side. Thus began a noble venture that continues to this day.

RE: 25th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION INVITATION

The West Virginia Filmmakers Guild requests the pleasure of your company at the 25th Anniversary Celebration in Sutton, WV the weekend of June 6-8, 2008. Charlie Cooper, WV’s legendary disc jockey and West Virginia Filmmaker Guild Founding Member, will be on hand to offer his elegant voice work. A Welcome Reception will be held at the Elk Hotel Lobby at 6 pm on Friday, June 6.

WVFG Business Meeting will take place at the Landmark Theater for the Arts at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 7 followed by several short workshops. Donuts and coffee will be available.

Kevin Levine, Esq. of Kay Casto & Chaney and Annie Harbison of WVU School of Law will discuss a membership survey and intellectual property rights. After lunch, Pam Haynes and Jamie Cope of the West Virginia Film Office will talk about “Tax Credits & Other Incentives”.

Then it’s back to movies the rest of the afternoon, lots of the best from WVFG founding members through the years.

Dinner will be held at 6 pm, where a short recognition ceremony will take place-recognizing WVFG founding members. Early members’ work will be screened throughout the evening.

On Sunday from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm features some screenings of members’ new works in progress.
