Update -Memorial Service, (formerly called West Side Methodist Church) Caanan Charge of the United Methodist Church, 401 Roane St., Charleston, WV on 5/31/2008, from 1-4 p.m.  there will be a jam session following.

Iris Bell was one of WV’s great singers, right up there with the Amazing Delores. I came to know Iris for a while during her return to the stage. She would come to Film Services to borrow 16 mm movies to project on-stage during her act. She was one of a handful of local musicians who understood mixing sight and sound long before MTV and everything else. Here is a nice Gazette story about her life.

Thank you for getting the word out about our Mother.

Mother was a true artist in every sense.

This is a very hard time, but knowing how very many people loved her and have stories to share, provides a measure ofcomfort. We, her children, are truly blessed to be able to hear her beautiful voice in her recorded songs, videos, and the news articles she wrote of other artists, and those written about her.

  2. Casey Hawkins Says:

I was fortunate enough to hear Iris in her first public performance, while we were still in school. At a Stonewall Jackson High school talent show. She played piano and sang “Black Coffee”. How wonderful she was!

  3. Steve Moore Says:

I played drums often with Iris when I lived in Charleston from 1978-1985. An amazing talent, a sweet lady and an absolute joy to work with.

    God speed.
