Grandmother from Out of Faith
Dr. Fred Pollock, president of the WV Jewish Film Festival, has announced the two films that will be shown at the B’Nai Jacob Syngagoue on Virginia Street, Charleston, WV on August 3rd at 6:30 PM. The two films are - “Be Fruitful and Multiply” and “Out of Faith,” a feature documentary about three generations of a family torn apart by interfaith marriages. More below. Admission is FREE.
BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY exposes the consequences of the biblical commandment—the mother of all Mitzvot—upon ultra-orthodox Jewish women, for whom life is a continuing cycle of pregnancy, childbirth, nursing and nurturing. This film profiles four ultra-orthodox women, in the U.S. and Israel, including Miriam, the mother of 16 children in Brooklyn, New York; Emunah, mother of 14 in Jerusalem; Yaffa, mother of 5 in Kfar Chabad; and Yentl, mother of 4 in Meah Shearim. The documentary chronicles the women’s daily routines of cooking, shopping, housework and child care, with the older children assigned chores to help their overburdened mothers while the men and boys study and pray. Israel 2005 (50 minutes)

OUT OF FAITH follows three generations of a family torn apart by conflicts over interfaith marriage. The family’s matriarch, Leah Welbel, and her husband Eliezer, both survived nearly three years in Auschwitz; however, in their minds, their grandchildren marrying non-Jews represents a posthumous victory for Hitler. This film captures the intimate details of one family’s attempt to persevere in the face of a heart wrenching intrafamilial conflict; a conflict that impacts countless families in multicultural societies. Anyone who has ever struggled to remain loyal to a cultural identity in the face of great societal pressure to assimilate will undoubtedly relate. USA 2006 (82 minutes)
