Marcy Brenner with WV filmmaker Ray Schmitt

Hardy County, WV filmmaker Ray Schmitt has won an international competition for his short film version of  “Dead Girl Walking.” The film is about Marcy Brenner, a singer-songwriter living on Ocracoke Island, NC who developed breast cancer. The film winning the award is a 10-minute trailer posted on line at the Breast Fest Film Festival where people could vote for their favorite film.

It beat out seven other films reaching the finals in the competition. Congrats to Marcy, Ray Schmitt, his deceased wife Judy to whom the film is dedicated, and his son Rich who edited the trailer, for making such a great film about such an important subject. The longer 36-minute version of the film had its world premiere in September at the Deepwater Theater in Ocracoke and premiered in October in WV at the 2008 WV Filmmakers Film Festival where it received an Award of Excellence.  Dead Girl Walking will be presented with the Amazing Grace award for Best Short Film in Toronto, on November 22, 2008.  Ray will be traveling to Toronto to receive the award.
