It’s great that local film promoters have kept the official State Film Office going now for a quarter center. I wrote and posted some documents relating to the 25 years of the festival elsewhere on this blog. Many people have given thousands of FREE hours of their time to bringing these great films to the area.
About the films - most unfortunately, neither one of the two new Dancing Outlaw films are being shown. But that doesn’t surprise me. Both producers of “White Lightin’” and “Wild and Wonderful Whites” have refused to send me a preview copy. Both films are being shown all over the world and I see almost daily Google news alerts. I guess we will have to wait for the DVD. “Dear Wendy” was never shown in WV, even though it is set here and Lars von Trier sent a researcher here from Copenhagen to do a week of research, building a mock down on his Zentropa Studio set. The festival is showing many great films including one I have seen on DVD - “Waltz with Bashir.” I know that they wanted to show it last year, but it was too expensive. The WV Jewish Film Festival also considered showing it because of its fame - it should have won the Oscar for best foreign film. It is really, really an awful, fearful film. Some of the I most want to see are - “Food, Inc,”, “Goodbye, Solo,” “The Hurt Locker”, and “The Secret of the Grain.” All of the films have received great reviews and its nice to have Mr. Chamber Stevens back again. Mr. John Street, president of the board, John Stone and others have worked hard to find these films. I hope that many people will get a chance to enjoy the great old WVSU Capitol Center again.

As an avid fan of WV film, and film in general, I find the selection for the 25th WVIFF incredibly dissapointing. There’s no celebration of WV filmmaking, save Coal Country. Most of the films on the schedule are already on DVD, and the ones that aren’t will be by the time the festival rolls around.
It will be nice to have Chambers back, but I’m not exactly sure what this Pitch Fest thing is about. Chambers is an acting coach, not a pitch guru. The festival would have been better to put his skills to use as such.
I would have very much liked them to celebrate WV
s film Heritage with a screening of something like Matewan or Night Of The Hunter.
A real dissapointment.
